Sunday Stash

I have recently been bitten and I am buying crochet goodies by the dozen. My hobby time is also dominated by the crochet hook…no surprise that when I stepped into The Hab—the most amazing crafts supply store in Mumbai, I picked up only crochet related items. Actually I pretty much behaved like a bull in a China shop…and then not knowing what to buy, came home with just the basic necessities—a wool crochet hook, some shiny cording(absolutely adorable0 and Anchor crochet thread !

The Hab is every craft person’s dream come true…the shop has a magnificent glass facade with large pickle bins full of colored threads. The walls are covered with sequins and other goodies. The floor above has quilting, knitting and craft related books. One feels like just staying up back there amidst all the crafty goodness…

My most recent crochet project, is about 3 inches wide now and I have been using a metal crochet hook for it so the new hook is a welcome change and might augment progress on that front…

Sashiko coasters in the makinhg

Sashiko is a Japanese stitch that comes in designs with repetitive trends and geometric patterns. Surprising how stitches are common across boundaries. In India, the same stitch is called ‘kantha’, a basic running stitch which is usually meant for floral motifs. Its predominant in Eastern India and one can find stoles, tunics and sarees beautifully embroidered with this stitch.

Here is my humble attempt at getting the line straight…which comes only with practice…

A wonderful week

As my househelp asked for a cloth for dusting, I quickly conjured up a dusting cloth by hand stitching bright hexies into a fat quarter and side stitching the fabric
Love the brightness and contrast of colours.

Next, I tried out a back pattern at it turned out just perfect with some machine embroidery in the handles.!
Its my sewing machine in the background…

And then, a quilted laptop sleeve from a christmas-y fabric that my friend Shahnaz gifted me

Quite a productive week I must say !

My very own Plus quilt

Its almost the end of the month and my Plus quilt is _finally_ showing some traction. The first row of Plus’ are pieced but then I realized that I hadn’t cut enough of the white fabric yet to take the quilt ahead, so back to the cutting board to cut some more charm squares in shades of blue and pure white. Think the quilt will turn out to be gorgeous.

Crochet trim

I have been completely bitten by the crochet bug. After having started the fusion crochet blanket and successfully completed 5 blocks in 5 days, I embarked upon the journey of making a crochet trim for a dupatta.

A dupatta is a long stole worn with the Indian traditional outfit, the Salwar Kameez.
On being suggested by a friend to try adding a trim to a dupatta, I found the perfect specimen required for this experiment at the back of my cupboard, a rather dull black plain cotton dupatta without a border. It looked like it could do with some makeover.In the absence of any real crochet thread at home, I just used some black wool AND was I surprised at the outcome or what !

For seasoned crochet enthusiasts this might look like a humble trim befitting a novice, but for me this turned out to be a real Anthropologie trim…am impressed by my humble attempt and the output.

A Plus quilt of my own

Over the weekend, I drew a simple plus quilt in 4 colours and calculated the fabric requirement, cut the fabric too. Now its ready to sew

The choice of colour is blue as its for a little baby boy!

Another goodie bag

Yet another goodie bag and in the true nature of Valentine’s day…predominated by the colour of red. Here is a surprise that came in the very next day. A bag of gifts from Singer with a notepad, calendar, 2 pens, 4 pencils and some pamphlets. Its so sweet of the Singer folks to send me stuff.

And on another note, my fusion crochet blanket seems to be progressing well. 2 days and 2 pieces ready ! That’s the fastest that any project has ever moved
Some quick math shows that if I continued with the present pace of completing one block a day, a 24 piece blanket would be ready in a month with a week to spare for joining the blocks together. I feel nostalgic calculating like this…back in school and college, while revising for an upcoming exam, I would calculate and recalculate the pace of revision required to complete the entire course…sometimes I proved the calculation right, sometimes not…but it was fun to calculate.
If I increase the quilt size it to a square 6X6 quilt, even then, the quilt should be done by march end.

Its been an amazing valentine’s Day this year!

I have been the lucky recipient of two gorgeous gifts and they are each very special and beautiful. They mean so much to me. I am on cloud nine or should I just say, I am on
a-cloud
i-cloud !

Yes you guessed it right. HD got me an i-phone 5.

Equally special is my other gift that I won for being the first to complete this house block at the IMQG(India Modern Quilt Guild) Facebook page. Kausalya sent me 5 bright and beautiful pieces of fabric along with the cutest button box I have ever seen—full of goodies ! Thanks Kausalya.
